Where Can You Get Married in Denmark?

One of the things that makes Denmark such a popular place to get married is the many different options available. From large, historic city halls to small and intimate town halls in charming coastal towns, there is truly something for everyone. There are a bunch of possibilities if you want to get married in Denmark. It all depends on what kind of atmosphere you and your partner dream of for your wedding day.

At Wedding Planner Denmark, we have built strong and trusted relationships with six of the most popular town halls that we work with  in the country: Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Tønder, Ærø, Ribe, and Esbjerg. These are places we know well, where the process runs smoothly, and where international couples are always given a warm welcome. We have helped hundreds of couples say “I do” in these locations, and we know how to make everything work quickly and without stress.

It’s important to note that it is also very much possible to get married in many other towns across Denmark. If you dream of a wedding in a larger city such as Aarhus, Odense, or Aalborg, or perhaps somewhere else entirely, we can help arrange that as well. With the right planning, you can find a location that perfectly matches your wishes while still keeping the process simple and straightforward.

If you want to get married at another location than a city hall in Denmark, that is very much possible. You will still need a wedding registrar from the city hall to attend, since only they can perform the legal ceremony, but the setting itself can be almost anywhere. We’ve put together a guide on beautiful wedding venues around Denmark for inspiration.

How Do I Get to the Town Hall?

Luckily, it’s quite simple. Denmark is a small and well-connected country, so you are never far from the town hall where your ceremony will take place. For example, the town hall in Tønder is located right by the German border, making it very convenient for couples arriving by car or train from Germany. The city halls in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg are just a short drive from Copenhagen Airport, which has direct connections to destinations all over the world. If you choose a location in Jutland, such as Esbjerg or Ribe, the nearest international airport is Billund, which is less than an hour away. There should be no problem getting to where you are getting married.

Travel between Danish towns is also straightforward thanks to the country’s efficient infrastructure. Trains and buses connect even smaller towns, and driving is easy with short distances and well-maintained roads. Many couples even combine their trip to the town hall with a few days of exploring Denmark, turning their wedding journey into a small holiday. No matter which location you choose, getting there is rarely complicated.

So, no matter which town hall you choose, traveling there and back will never be a problem. Denmark is compact, easy to get around, and every location is close to larger towns or cities with good hotels, restaurants, and venues where you can celebrate after your ceremony. We are happy to guide you with these practical details. With the right planning, and a little help from us, your wedding in Denmark will be a simple and enjoyable experience.

Booking Your Wedding Date

Some town halls in Denmark, especially the popular ones, can be fully booked well in advance, particularly on weekends and during holidays. If you’re looking for the fastest way to get married in Denmark, being fixed on one specific location and date can make the process difficult.

The best way to secure a wedding date quickly is to remain flexible. By being open to weekdays or considering alternative town halls, it is often possible to book a ceremony much sooner. Some locations naturally have less availability than others due to their popularity and central location. Copenhagen City Hall, for example, is one of the most sought-after venues. If you insist on getting married at one of the more popular town halls, you will need to be patient, or be open to less convenient time slots.

The Wedding Ceremony

Once you have decided where in Denmark you wish to get married, submitted your documents, and received approval from the Agency of Family Law, the only thing left is the big day itself.

On the day of your ceremony, you will usually need to present your documents once again. This means bringing your valid passport and, if applicable, your EU ID card. These must be shown to the wedding registrar before the ceremony can begin. Having your documents ready ensures that everything goes smoothly when you arrive. See all the required documents for before, during, and after your wedding day here.

The ceremony itself is short and simple, often lasting only a few minutes. The registrar will say a few words before you and your partner sign the official marriage documents. After that, you are legally married. You are welcome to bring your own witnesses, but if you prefer, the town hall can provide them for you. This will be arranged in advance when you book your ceremony.

Even though the ceremony is brief, many couples find it deeply meaningful, and of course, there is always time for photos and a celebration afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Danish City Hall wedding ceremony is known for being simple, elegant, and short typically lasting around 10 minutes.

During the ceremony, the registrar will say a few words, sometimes including a short poem or speech. This is followed by the exchange of legal vows. You also have the option to write and include your own personal vows to make the moment even more special.

After the vows, you will sign the marriage license, and the ceremony is complete.

All Danish City Halls provide beautiful and intimate ceremony rooms, many of which are located in historic buildings that add charm and meaning to your special day.

Copenhagen City Hall offers wedding ceremonies on the following days:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

Tuesdays and Sundays are not available for weddings.

Please note that Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular wedding days and often get fully booked several weeks in advance. We recommend that you plan and reserve your wedding date early if you want one of these days.

Yes, Danish law requires two witnesses to be present at all civil marriage ceremonies. These witnesses can be your family members or friends, or they can be provided by the City Hall.

If you’re getting married on a weekday, most City Halls in Denmark will arrange the witnesses for you free of charge.

However, for weekend weddings, some town halls may ask that you bring your own witnesses. We always inform you in advance if this applies to your selected location and date.

Copenhagen City Hall typically provides an immediate response when you request to book a wedding date. However, due to high demand, there is currently a waiting period of approximately 8 to 10 weeks for available appointments.

We recommend that couples remain flexible with their wedding date to increase the chance of securing a preferred time. If you have a tight schedule or require a faster timeline, we can also guide you through alternative wedding venues in Denmark that may offer earlier availability.

You must present your passports and any relevant residency permits or visas at the Copenhagen City Hall on the same day as your wedding ceremony. Please make sure to arrive 15–20 minutes early and go directly to the Information Desk inside the City Hall.

There, you will be guided to the correct office where your documents will be reviewed before the ceremony can begin. It’s important that both partners are present and that all documents are valid and match what was submitted in your marriage application.

Arriving early ensures a smooth start to your wedding day and gives the registrar time to confirm everything is in order.

Yes, couples can get married at many beautiful locations in Copenhagen beyond the official City Hall. The Copenhagen Wedding Office offers outdoor wedding ceremonies (“open-air weddings”) on selected dates at iconic spots in the city, such as historic buildings, waterfront locations, or famous landmarks. These settings give you a memorable and romantic experience beyond the traditional city hall room.

For even more flexibility, you can book a private registrar to come to a location of your choice. Whether it’s a cozy restaurant, a scenic garden, a private residence, or even on a boat, you can choose a place that reflects your story and preferences. This makes it easy to plan a unique wedding in Denmark on your own terms.

Keep in mind that these alternative ceremonies often involve extra fees and require booking in advance. If you’re planning a wedding in Copenhagen or anywhere in Denmark, it’s a good idea to discuss your preferred location early to make sure it’s available on your desired date.
