Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ceremony like?
The Danish wedding ceremony is short. A city hall wedding will last around ten minutes. Usually, there are some words spoken by the registrar, maybe a poem, then the legal vows are exchanged (you can write your own vows too), followed by the signing of your marriage license. All locations have beautiful ceremony rooms where the wedding will take place.
On which days can we have our wedding ceremony at Copenhagen City Hall?
Copenhagen City Hall conducts weddings on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. However, ceremonies are not performed on Sundays or Tuesdays. Fridays and Saturdays are particularly popular and tend to book up quickly, so early planning is recommended.
Do we need witnesses for the wedding ceremony?
It is a legal requirement that two witnesses attend every wedding ceremony in Denmark, these can be family or friends, or they can be arranged by the city hall. In Denmark, witnesses are always organized for you if you need them in any City Hall for a weekday ceremony – there is no extra charge for witnesses on a weekday.
Some City Halls will require you to bring one or two witnesses for a wedding on weekends.
How long does it take to receive a response when booking a wedding date at Copenhagen City Hall?
Copenhagen City Hall provides an immediate response when booking a wedding date. However, there is currently a waiting period of approximately 10 weeks for available dates. We recommend being flexible with your wedding date to accommodate this schedule.
When should we present our documents at Copenhagen City Hall?
You are required to present your passports and any applicable residency permits or visas at the Copenhagen City Hall Information Desk at least one business day before your wedding. This can be done Monday through Friday, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Can we hold our wedding ceremony at a location other than Copenhagen City Hall?
Yes, you can have your wedding ceremony at various locations in Copenhagen beyond the City Hall. The Copenhagen Wedding Office offers ‘open-air’ ceremonies on selected dates at iconic venues throughout the city, providing a unique backdrop for your special day.
If you prefer a more personalized setting, you can book a private registrar to conduct your ceremony at a location of your choice, such as a garden, private residence, boat, or restaurant. This option allows you to select the exact date and place that holds special meaning for you.
Please note that both ‘open-air’ ceremonies and private registrar bookings may involve additional fees and require advance planning to ensure availability.
